Social work is all about forming strong bonds with people and offering them support through general advice & counselling. A social worker is a person who assists people (adults and children) in living more independently and successfully. They do not only work with the client, but also with the client’s family and friends. Up on becoming a professional social worker, you’ll be expected to work in collaboration with some other organizations such as Schools, Law Firms, the Local Authority Department, General Practitioners, and Police etc. In a nutshell, working as a Social worker can be hard work but keeping in mind the rewards and benefits, it’s worth giving a shot!
Work
Generally, Social workers provide two kinds of services, namely:
· Adult Services
· Children/youth services
Adult Social Work involves working with elderly people, people with mental/learning difficulties, the physically disabled, young offenders, people with HIV/AIDS, drug addicts, asylum seekers and normal people experiencing social exclusion. The social worker is required to provide basic care and well-being services to these people. In some cases, residential care might be needed as well.
Children or Youth Social Work entails working with young people and helping them cope with their daily life problems such as bullying at school or illness at home. It can also involve working at Child Care centres and handling adoption/foster care cases .
